Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader, Tan Kah Kee. Since its establishment, it has produced over 200,000 graduates, and today, it comprises 27 schools, 76 departments, and 10 research institutes.
The university offers 31 doctoral degrees and 50 master’s degrees in first-class disciplines, supported by 15 postdoctoral research centers. It also hosts 9 National Educational Centers for Talents and is widely recognized for its excellence in 5 first-class and 9 second-class national key disciplines.
With cooperative ties to over 270 universities worldwide and the co-establishment of 15 Confucius Institutes across North America, Europe, and Africa, XMU has grown into a world-class comprehensive university.
Xiamen University Malaysia Campus
Established in 2016, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMU Malaysia) is the first overseas campus approved by the Chinese government. Its creation marks a historic milestone in strengthening China–Malaysia relations, blending rich Chinese heritage with global education standards.

Details
School of Information Science and Technology
A hub of technological innovation and global collaboration, the School of Information Science & Engineering and the Software School at XMU are among the earliest and most comprehensive engineering schools in China. The School of Information Science and Engineering houses a national exemplary teaching center for electronic information and the Ministry of Education’s Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Communication and Marine Information Engineering.
The school maintains extensive academic exchanges with leading universities and enterprises worldwide, and has appointed over 20 distinguished scholars—including members of the Engineering Academies of the US and Canada—as part-time, guest, or honorary professors. The Software School has also been honored with the Exemplary Software School Construction Achievements Prize by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
School of Ocean and Environment
The College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, XMU, is recognized as the cradle of oceanographic education in China and currently ranks second in marine science nationwide. Marine studies at XMU date back to the early 1920s, and by 1930 it became the country’s center for marine biology research. In 1946, XMU established China’s first marine studies school and department of oceanography.
Looking forward, a China–ASEAN Marine Science School will be established at XMUM with the support of the China–ASEAN Marine Cooperation Fund, focusing on talent development and technological innovation for ASEAN countries.
School of Chinese Language and Culture
With a long history and profound academic heritage, the College of Humanities at XMU evolved from the Chinese Department (established in 1921) and the China Studies Institute (founded in 1926). Legendary scholars such as Lu Xun and Lin Yutang once taught here.
The college is home to the National Talents Training and Research Base in Basic Disciplines of Humanities and several National Quality Courses recognized by the Ministry of Education. Students here gain a deep, systematic education in Chinese language, literature, history, culture, and philosophy.
School of Medicine
XMU’s Medical College is a premier training ground for high-level medical professionals. Supported by seven Grade-Three Class-A affiliated hospitals (the highest level in China) and more than 20 teaching and practice bases, the college provides world-class medical education and training.
Its faculty includes 243 professors and associate professors, among them four academicians, ensuring strong academic leadership. Since the establishment of its Traditional Chinese Medicine Department in 1956, the college has produced over 20,000 outstanding medical personnel who serve in more than 50 countries worldwide.
School of Economics and Management
Renowned for its excellence in economics and management, XMU is one of only two universities in China to house three national key disciplines in these fields. It is also the first university in mainland China to award doctoral degrees in accounting, having produced nearly one-third of all accounting PhDs in the country.
